I think the theme of Lay That Trumpet In Our Hands is equality. Throughout their life Reesa and her family deal with a lot of death and attacks. They have many friends and family that run away from their fears. Facing the Ku Klux Klan and their racist ways, the McMahons stay and fight.

When the news of Marvin’s death reached the 11-year-old Reesa, that’s when her eyes opened. She saw that everywhere in the small town of Mayflower there are racist people. There's so much, even her own flesh and blood is racist. Her cousins use the “N” word freely and their parents do not even mind. That is when it became Reesa’s goal to help fight the prejudice people in the world.

Ren, Reesa’s little brother, was with his friend going to watch the gators. They traveled to the marshes when they saw the Ku Klux Klan. They started to mock and make fun of their robes. After doing this for too long a man shot at them; scared they started running away from the Ku Klux Klan. While running away from the gunfire a freeborn object hit Ren in the face. When they got home Ren got bandaged and Reesa was upset with him. She asks why he was making fun of the Ku Klux Klan and why they didn’t leave. Ren answered that he thought they would be safe because they were white. Reesa hit Ren hard on the head for thinking in a terrible way.
While listening to her dad Reesa over hears a discussion between the marshal and her dad. They had two sides of the story, the which involved killing the black prisoners because they attacked them, or the blacks that are innocent. Reesa believed the blacks side of the story because she knew the corruption of the white authorities.
Reesa began to realize that even little children, like herself, are racist and do not practice equality. Reesa was invited to go to a birthday party where she would have the
worst party of he life. The children would play games like Marco Polo but use racist slang.
Reesa’s family played a big role in pushing in equality. Her dad played a very big role in the extermination of the Ku Klux Klan. After Ren was shot at his dad made it personal. He teamed up with the FBI to help, which put his family in a big risk. They took the Ku Klux Klan to court but with must of the Ku Klux Klan in the authorities they were set free. This doesn’t mean that they were off the hook, Warren, Reesa’s dad, blown up most of the dynamite to intimidate the Ku Klux Klan.
In doing this they, the McMahon family, has set in the rock in motion. Soon segregation would come in help mix the blacks and the whites together. Even more would come and help get the world how it is now. That is why I picked equality as my theme.
